In Wanderlust Trio, Grammy-winning jazz musician Edward Pérez and jazz guitar heavyweight Vinicius Gomes meet with special guest African drummer JoJo Kuo, a longtime member of the iconic band lead by the great Fela Kuti, for a night of spontaneous musical improvisation. In this trio Jazz and Latin Jazz meet Africa to find their common ground on stage, drawing upon disparate influences and finding that magical space where anything goes in the name of groove and captivating music.
Edward Perez, though primarily a jazz bassist, has lead an eclectic career including collaborations with the greats of a myriad of styles including but not limit to: Paquito D’Rivera (Latin Jazz), Eva Ayllón (Afro-Peruvian music), Diego Amador (flamenco), Marcel Khalife (Arabic music) and many others. He is currently a member of the Silkroad Ensemble and recently took home a Grammy this year in the classical compendium category as part of “Passion for Bach and Coltrane” with Imani Winds, Harlem Quartet, Alex Brown, Neal Smith, and AB Spellman.
Originally from Cameroon, the great drummer JoJo Kuo was born into a family of traditional percussionists. Before long he was touring the world with the most sought after groups in Africa and went on to become a producer and drummer who has shared the stage with the likes of Fela Kuti, Harry Belafonte, Peter Gabriel, and Richard Bona.
